What's the topic about? THE SWITCH ofcourse. "WTF?!!" some might think... well... I figured one day that maya runs a lot better under linux (interface wise) so I've decided to get rid of the good-old-and-comfortable XP and install Fedora Core 2. Reasons?
- maya runs better (under windows my marking menus in maya 6 slow down after the scene gets complicated)
- i can install FireGL drivers on my old R8500 (that's a BIG plus, can't do that under windows)
- new versions of shake are available (I found out how great app it is thanks to zoomzoom)
- linux has better memory management (or so they say, but with 1GB windows still uses swap even if it has ~750MB of phisical mem free - what the hell is up with that shit???!!!)
- always good to learn something new
- check out this [link] sweet gnome mod - how can you NOT like it?
This is my second attempt at switching to linux. I hope this one goes better... I'm going to install W2k on a 5GB partition for purposes of... scanning and printing - damn Lexmark didn't bothered to write Linux drivers for the P3120 all-in-one.
Here I go wish me luck. I'm trying to prove Linux is a good system for a graphics workstation here

<<; i may try the same thing if it turns out its easier o.o; i'm due for a reformate ANY week now so yea XP i can learn linux and still keep the windows installed

As for games - if there are separate linux versions then you can run them (open gl games mostly), some of them will run under winex but you gotta understand that linux is NOT a good choice when you like to run games often.
2. First you install XP then you install linux - the bootloader will recognize your windows installation and will let you choose which system to boot during startup.
3. Yes you can share files but that's a bit limited. Linux has it's own file system ext3, windows will not be able to read/write data from that partition (you will not even be able to see the linux partitions under windows). There are special programs to read ext3 partitions under windows though. From the other side it's a little easier since you can mount your windows FAT32 & NTFS partitions BUT if your windows is on NTFS you will not be able to write data (2.6+ kernels have an experimental option to write to NTFS but when I tried it i got the "Access Denied" message anyway). Bottom line is:
- you want to be able to use windows partitions under linux it's best to choose FAT32.
- you want to use linux partitions under windows - you're gonna need a special app for that
Hope that clears things up.
